Current Division Specification:
Short Stirrup – 11 & Under
  1. Open to riders 11 and under who have never shown over fences 3’0” or higher. To be shown over a course of fences 2’0” in height. Points accrue to a horse or pony/rider team. If an exhibitor shows over fences 3’0” or higher at the same horse show she/he enters in the Short Stirrup division, then only the ribbons won in the class with the higher fences will count for points. Year-end awards go to the rider of the horse/pony.
  2. If any Short Stirrup 11 & under flat class has more than twelve (12) entries, it must be split into two sections and the new split sections must be maintained throughout the flat classes at the horse show. Any Short Stirrup over fences class with more than twelve (12) entries must be double pinned and need not be split. Two sets of awards and ribbons must be given, and SAHJA points will be given in each section.

Long Stirrup – 12 & Over
  1. Open to amateur riders 12 & over who have never shown over fences 3’0” or higher. To be shown over a course of fences 2’0” in height. Points accrue to a horse or pony/rider team. If an exhibitor shows over fences 3’0” or higher at the same horse show she/he enters in the Long Stirrup division, then only the ribbons won in the class with the higher fences will count for points. Year-end awards go to the rider of the horse/pony.
  2. Once a horse or pony/rider team has won champion in the year end SAHJA Long Stirrup division they are no longer eligible for year-end awards.

Proposed Division Specification:
Short Stirrup – 11 & Under
  1. Open to riders 11 and under who have never shown over fences 2’6” or higher. To be shown over a course of fences 2’0” in height. Points accrue to a horse or pony/rider team. If an exhibitor shows over fences 2’6” or higher at the same horse show she/he enters in the Short Stirrup division, then only the ribbons won in the class with the higher fences will count for points.

Long Stirrup – 12 & Over
  1. Open to amateur riders 12 & over who have never shown over fences 2’6” or higher. To be shown over a course of fences 2’0” in height. Points accrue to a horse or pony/rider team. If an exhibitor shows over fences 2’6” or higher at the same horse show she/he enters in the Long Stirrup division, then only the ribbons won in the class with the higher fences will count for points. Year-end awards go to the rider of the horse/pony.
  2. Once a horse or pony/rider team has won champion in the year end SAHJA Long Stirrup division they are no longer eligible for year-end awards.

1 - This is very limiting to competent amateurs who are bringing along green horses. At the rated show, amateurs would be limited to competing with trainers and only mid-week classes. At the schooling shows, they would be limited to just one or two open classes.

2 - This is also limiting to any riders who may be returning from a nasty injury. Recovery from a nasty fall/injury takes time to physical recovery to be able to return to previous athletic levels. An even bigger challenge is mental recovery of courage and confidence especially in the over 30 population. Speaking from personal experience, I was perfectly capable of 3' division this year, and after shattering my femur at the beginning of summer I'm barely competent at the 2' division on my greener horse.

Suggestion: Leave as is, or amend to add horse/rider combination having never done over 2'6.

2 - This is limiting to our aging amateur population. Many amateurs have taken a substantial break for career/family, and it takes time to rebuild courage and skills to jump higher fences.

This is also limiting to any riders who are past their prime physicsally/mentally and still want to show even as their body ages. Being able to jump 3' in your 40's does not mean your going to be able to jump that size when your in your late 60's, 70's. (And we do have these riders at our shows).

Suggest editing to Not having jumped x height within the past 5 years.

The proposed change would limit riders from showing in both this 2’ division and the 2’6” divisions at the same show/season and I agree with this. Long/Short stirrup should be a stepping stone to the 2’6” divisions.

But I also agree with Erin Pett’s suggestion to modify the clause to allow for riders who may have previously shown at 2’6” or above years ago but now need that stepping stone division before moving back to higher jumps. After not jumping for several years due to injuries and life events, my skills and bravery are not what they were 10+ years ago when I was competing at 3’. I would appreciate having a division under 2’6” that I am eligible for where I can rebuild my confidence for the 2’6” plus divisions.
